Alix Miller, Certified Life Coach in Richmond, VA
I came to coaching after enjoying a 27-year career in education. Starting out as an elementary teacher, my career path later led me to the Virginia Department of Education. In 1993 I started a small consulting business, training teachers, parents, and librarians about assessments in early literacy and how to select quality books for preschoolers and young readers.
In 2000, I published a book through Portage and Main Press titled, Book Steps: Leveled Trade Books for Guided Reading, Independent Reading, and Authentic Assessment. With this as a resource, in 2002 I began working one-on-one with teachers, setting up classroom libraries to help them meet specific goals with their students in mind. Thus the seeds had been planted for my work as a coach. In 2004 I launched Avancer Coaching and with it, an exciting second career.
Because learning and professional preparation are two things that I value highly, I’ve worked hard to become an effective, certified life coach. (You can see a list of my credentials on the right.) The coaching I do with clients is also informed by my experience in the business world and within my family.
